FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to have Gen Y classes to use this guide?
No. This guide can be used by any project-oriented teacher wishing to
learn more about facilitating community service projects. The student
leadership modules can also supplement existing classes, or be the basis
for a new class. The curriculum has many ideas based on the exemplary
Gen Y model, but at the core, is based on constructivist pedagogy and
concepts of building a learning community in the classroom.
What experience does a teacher need to teach this
course? Although sometimes taught by a technology teacher, these
units often fit into a social studies course or other non-technology course.
The technology skills used by the students are researched and learned
by the students themselves over the course of the term.
What grade level does the curriculum guide address?
This class can be given most successfully to middle and high school students.
For service projects that are not on school grounds, students should have
the maturity to handle themselves off-campus. The technology skills are
also similar to middle/high school entry level technology courses, and
meet the ISTE NETS standards for students. Since this is a project-based
class, there will be some variation in the level of the tech skills of
the projects, allowing the students to work to their level of interest
and comfort with technology.
