Student Leadership & Community Service Curriculum

Overview
The goal of the Student Leadership & Community Service guide is to provide opportunities for students to become proactive leaders through extensive use of advanced technology.

  • 4 unit comprehensive curriculum
  • Learning Contracts
  • Flexible - can be run as an intensive semester elective, a full-year course, or a service club
  • Online collaboration network gives students access to other motivated students for connections, support and collaboration
  • Generation YES website provides project planning and reporting tools

Four modules form the basis of the course. These modules are flexible so that each class can be tailored to the unique situation of the class, school, and time alloted for the course. The modules are supplemented by learning advanced technology skills that are used in the community service project.

A contract is designed by the student and teacher as the guiding document for the course. As they work through the process of preparing the contract and then fulfilling it, the student learns valuable "soft" skills including project management, collaboration, and leadership. These real-world skills complement the technology skills and create a powerful authentic learning experience.

Guide Contents
The Curriculum Guide contains 4 flexible modules with detailed lesson plans and activities for the teacher. In addition, there are tips, best practices, and practical advice on facillitating the various aspects of this class, including partnerships with community organizations. The curriculum guide also contains teacher planning material to help the teacher most effectively plan the use of these four modules within the available time.

Module 1: Leadership in the 21st Century
This module looks at leadership in the modern world. The class uses electronic research techniques to explore leadership qualities and styles on the Internet. After forming a definition of leadership, students research the leadership qualities and styles of a specific world leader. The students expand that research as they investigate the organizational styles of selected technology companies. This team research allows the students to model the technology industry's team approach to product development.

Module 2: Personal Leadership Styles and Presentation Skills
Moving from global to local, the students begin to personalize their knowledge of leadership and develop their own unique leadership style. Students will informally assess themselves to identify their personal leadership qualities and traits. This module also covers multimedia presentation and technical design skills necessary to effectively use presentation software in a group setting.

Module 3: Community Leaders
In this module, the students plan and organize meetings with local leaders in the fields of Law/Justice, Education, Social/Health Services, Government and Business/Industry. Students undertake full responsibility for these meetings - finding and making contacts, preparing the agenda, making the arrangements to meet with the class, and receive coaching on effective communication techniques when dealing with business people. The students participate in the meetings and report the results when the meetings are over. By participating in these meetings the students will understand the needs of the local community and be able to identify areas where they can volunteer to use their advanced technology skills on a community service project.

Module 4: Community Service
Either as a result of the research, or by working with existing industry partners, students identify and participate in a community service project that involves the use of technology skills. Students each partner with community members to plan and implement their projects. Using the online reporting and management tools and working with the teacher, each student completes an on line Project Contract. This contract documents the community service project plan, technology skills that will be learned, and formalizes the learning goals of the project.
